I’m often asked about blogging… What is a blog? Why blog? Why blog for business? These questions have prompted me to write this post.

What is a blog?

A blog is similar to an online journal where your entries are displayed in chronological order. However, it is more than just a journal, it promotes two-way communication between you, the “blogger” and your readers.

The difference between a blog and a website is that a website is static and doesn’t change often, whereas blogs are regularly updated with short “posts” encouraging your readers to come back.

Why blog for business?

To keep it short… as a small business owner, blogging is a great way to establish yourself as an expert in your field or a thought leader. You can answer common questions and share more about how you work with your clients, and share some invaluable insight that will help a potential client get to know who you are. Besides the “showing who you are”, blogging also lifts your search engine ranking and helps drive traffic to your website.

Search engines love blogs…  Why?  Because search engines like updated content and when you add a blog post, search engines recognise there is new information on your site and will index keywords related to your post and site.

Adding to a blog is simple and as easy as sending an email.

To create a blog you need to use blogging software. Your blog can be stand-alone, using a free, hosted blogging software such as Blogger, TypePad and WordPress. If you’re a small business, we highly recommend you host your own blog and attach it to your website. You can do this by using the self-hosted version of WordPress, which is also free.

I won’t go into the benefits of self hosting your blog however, if you would like to know more, feel free to contact me or read why you should consider WordPress. I offer a free, 30 minute confidential, no obligation telephone consultation if you would like to explore having a blog attached to your website.

Blessings in your business!
